Job Cuts at YouTube:100 Employees Affected by Layoffs

GOOGLE Announces Job Cuts: 100 Positions Slashed at YouTube Amid Ongoing Layoffs

In a move following a series of piecemeal layoffs that saw over 1,000 jobs cut in the past week, tech giant GOOGLE has informed employees at its video platform, YouTube, that 100 positions will be eliminated. The announcement, conveyed through an email reviewed by The New York Times on Wednesday (Jan 17), targeted workers from YouTube’s operations and creator management teams.

According to a source familiar with the matter, YouTube, the world’s leading video service, had 7,173 employees as of Tuesday. Mary Ellen Coe, YouTube’s chief business officer, addressed the workforce in a note, stating, “We’ve made the decision to eliminate some roles and say goodbye to some of our teammates.” The note assured that individuals in the Americas and the Asia-Pacific region who might be affected would be notified by the end of the day.

The move reflects the broader restructuring efforts within the tech industry, as companies adapt to evolving market dynamics and challenges.

The layoffs, which were earlier reported by the blog Tubefilter, primarily affect groups of employees who offer support to YouTube’s millions of content creators, two sources with knowledge of the cuts said.

YouTube has struggled to fully recover from an advertising slowdown in the past year and has contended with strong competition from TikTok, the short-video service popular with younger users.

Google has been looking for more than a year for ways to cut costs and trim bureaucracy. Last week, the company eliminated more than 1,000 jobs from its core engineering division; its voice-operated product, Google Assistant; and some projects involving augmented reality, the technology that combines the real world with a digital overlay.
